29 July 2010: Get ready for the big voting referendum.
Preparations are now under way for what could be a massive change in the way the country’s elections are decided.
The Government has promised to hold a nation-wide referendum next year on whether people want to replace the current “first past the post” system.
Although the poll is months away, council officials in Bury are already working hard to make sure that all eligible residents can have their say on polling day.
Staff will be sending forms to households over the coming month (August) to compile a new electoral register for the referendum and the local elections on May 5 next year.
Mark Sanders, the electoral registration officer for Bury, said: “It’s simple to register - all you have to do is complete the form and you’ll be able to help choose the people that make the decisions which affect your everyday life.
“For many people this will be their first national referendum, and may be worried about what to do. You can find out more by calling 0161 253 5113 or go to www.aboutmyvote.co.uk.
“The voting referendum on May 5, 2011 may change the way we vote in the future. Secure your voice on this important issue: it only takes a few minutes.”
